Erin Castro, a licensed vocational nurse at Floresville’s Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home, is the Texas Health Care Association’s 2016 Nurse of the Year for Region 3, which includes South Texas.
Castro is one of 10 nurses honored statewide by the nonprofit group that advocates for improved long-term care in Texas. She was recognized with the honor at the association’s recent annual conference in San Antonio.
She was nominated by Rachel Bake, director of nursing at Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home, with recommendations from nursing facility residents, family members, peers, and supervisors. She was selected by a panel of long-term care clinicians from across the state.
Castro earned her nursing degree from Galen College of Nursing in 2011 and began working at the state veterans home in 2012. Her co-workers praise her eagerness to mentor new team members as well as to “do whatever it takes” by picking up extra shifts, or working in another unit, to ensure that the home’s residents are well-taken care of.
