One Simple Way to Lower Your Heart Risk Daily
Jul 29, 2024
Taking care of your heart health can feel overwhelming at times. There are many factors to consider, and committing to a lifestyle overhaul may feel impossible. It turns out even the smallest steps can make a difference. Yes, adding more fruits and veggies to your plate, losing weight, or quitting smoking can all contribute to heart health. But did you know there is one simple thing you can do every day to lower your risk of heart disease, stroke and heart failure by a whopping 14%?
According to the American Heart Association*, a study that analyzed the daily steps of 452 participants aged 70 and older found walking an additional 500 steps per day – just a quarter mile – was associated with a 14% lower risk of heart disease, stroke or heart failure. That’s big news! Many people believe you must take 10,000 steps daily to see health benefits, but this study shows that the benefits start with thousands of fewer steps.
Here are some other findings of the study:
When compared to adults who took less than 2,000 steps per day, adults who took about 4,500 steps per day had a 77% lower observed risk of experiencing a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke.
During the 3.5-year follow-up period, only about 3.5% of participants who took around 4,500 steps per day had a cardiovascular event, compared to 11.5% of those who took less than 2,000 steps per day.
Remember, steps don’t have to be taken all at once. If going for a walk doesn’t sound appealing, try to add extra steps to your day wherever you can. Make it a point to stand up at least once an hour. Park farther away, and take the stairs if possible. Even walking around your living room while you watch TV can help. Every little bit counts.
