This month we celebrate Veterans Day by honoring and thanking those who served. At The Heights® at Medical Center, we have the privilege of caring for our heroes with Veteran-Focused Care. We strive to honor each Veteran’s unique journey and provide them with the specialized care they need to live the highest quality of life possible.
Senior Veterans Have Unique Needs
Veterans are part of a unique culture and may require specialized care related to their service experience. According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, there are conditions that are more prevalent among Veterans than the general populations, such as:
PTSD. PTSD can result from witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. According to the study, 36% of male Veterans suffer from PTSD, which can cause exaggerated startle responses, negative thoughts and feelings, sleep issues, isolation and other psychiatric issues.
Traumatic Brain Injuries. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) related to military combat can cause a variety of symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, problems with mobility, fatigue, irritability, memory loss and inability to focus.
Depression. The diagnosis rate for Veteran depression is reported at 14%, but it may be higher. Some Veterans may be reluctant to seek treatment, but increased awareness and acceptance of PTSD has led many more Veterans to get the care they need.
Chronic Pain. Chronic pain is not uncommon as we age, but it may be compounded in Veterans who have experienced serious injuries during their service. Proper diagnosis and treatment are critical to pain reduction and management.
Sensory Aids and Prosthesis. Due to combat-related injuries, many Veterans have experienced amputations, hearing loss or blindness, and use prosthesis or sensory aids to help them navigate daily life.
Hazardous Exposures. Many Veterans were exposed to hazardous chemicals such as Agent Orange or “burn pits” during their service and suffer from lung diseases or other health issues.
