VLB picks Touchstone to oversee 3 Texas State Veterans Homes

Transition expected to be complete by end of year – quality care top priority

(AUSTIN, Texas) — Jerry Patterson, chairman of the Texas Veterans Land Board, announced today that Touchstone Communities has been selected to administer Texas State Veterans Homes in El Paso, McAllen and Big Spring.

Touchstone Communities already manages Texas State Veterans Homes in Amarillo, Bonham, Floresville, Temple and Tyler.

“Touchstone Communities already upholds the high standards the VLB demands for our Texas veterans and I expect a smooth transition,” Patterson said. “Texas State Veterans Homes provide the best care any where for our veterans and there should be no real changes in the day-to-day operations at the homes.”

Patterson said he expects Touchstone to assume control of operations at El Paso’s Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home and McAllen’s Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home by Dec. 1, and Big Spring’s Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veterans Home by Jan. 1, 2015.

Touchstone Communities was founded in 1991 by Stan Studer Jr. Touchstone Communities offers a continuum of care for elders that include rehabilitative services, skilled nursing, assisted living, as well as specialized care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease or needing respite or behavioral care. To better service its residents, all of Touchstone’s communities operate on an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, which lessens the amount of time nurses spend on paperwork and creates more time for them to care for residents. The system is efficient and allows for nurses to provide more care directly at the residents’ bedside. Touchstone also was selected to manage the nation’s first small house for veterans at the Tyler’s Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home.

Patterson wrote the law that created the Texas State Veterans Home system as a state senator and has managed the growth of the homes as chairman of the Veterans Land Board for 12 years.
