Veterans Day Honored at Tyler’s Texas State Veterans Home Friday, Nov. 9

This Friday, November, 9 is the first Veteran’s Day celebration at Tyler’s Texas State Veterans Home. The event is expected to draw hundreds to celebrate service to our nation.

The Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home in Tyler was named for two great local heroes, Travis Earl Watkins and James Marion Logan, both recipients of the Medal of Honor.

The home  opened early 2012 and has a unique setting with first-class long term care for up to 100 residents, including up to 20 Alzheimer’s residents in a separate, secured unit. Created and operated exclusively for Texas veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents, the Watkins-Logan home offers a one-of-a-kind family-style setting.

The homes are like a community with 10 cottages and a common building. It provides a chance for the families to have a social connection and yet maintain privacy and independence for residents.

The event will include the ROTC cadets from John Tyler High School who will post the colors and General Red Brown, Deputy Commander of the Texas Army National Guard will be the keynote speaker. The event will end with a Blue Star Presentation, in which the family of a recently deployed solider will be presented with the Blue Star Flag.

The event is set to begin at 10 a.m. Friday, at the Watkins-Logan Texas State Veterans Home at 11466 Honor Lane in Tyler.
