Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home Honors Veterans with Pinning Ceremony

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home honored Veterans today with a pinning ceremony, many who served in World War II and Vietnam.

Ussery-Roan houses Veterans from ages 56 to 102, 37 of whom are World War II Veterans.

“He’s 102,” Joe Linger says about his father, Leslie Linger, who is a World War II Veteran. “I’m very proud of him and appreciative. All of the Veterans, they’re just wonderful people. Without them willing to sacrifice their time and being away from the families we wouldn’t be a proud and free nation.”

The pinning ceremony was to honor Veterans for their service and sacrifices.

“It is with great pleasure that we can take this day to honor those who gave up thereselves and their families to provide such a great service to our family,” Linger continued.

A table was set to honor those fallen and lost military men and women, it is known as a Missing Man Table.

Veterans at Ussery-Roan appreciated the time put into the celebration.

“There’s so many great people here. I did nothing fantastic but there’s people here who did.” Millard Spicer, an Air Force Veteran, said, “They lost limbs and bellies and most people don’t understand that.”

While some might not understand what some Veterans have experienced, they can still show their appreciation.

“Just consider who they are, where they are, and what they did.” Joe Linger continued, “And they’re people that keep this country free. And then in the future.”

One of the caregivers at the home said this was the busiest Veterans Day they have had since he has worked here.

The celebration was open to more than just Veterans living in the home.

Veterans came to visit dressed in uniform for each branch to perform the presenting of the flag.
