Local veterans home celebrates 5 years

Texas Land Commissioner and chairman of the Veterans Land Board Jerry Patterson will be the keynote speaker at an open house Wednesday celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Usser-Roan Texas State Veterans Home.

The public event will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the home, 1020 Tascosa Road, according to a new release.

The home provides care for up to 120 veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents whose sons or daughters died while on active duty. Part of that care is in a 30-bed, secured Alzheimer’s unit, according to the Veterans Land Board website. Part of the name comes from Mike Ussery, a longtime veterans advocate and Randall County Republican Party chairman. He was on the Land Board when it chose Amarillo for the home but died just before the facility’s ground breaking. The home is also named for Charles Roan, of Claude, who earned a Medal of Honor after throwing himself on a grenade to save his fellow Marines on a small Pacific island during World War II.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Veterans Land Board built the home.
