At The Enclave skilled nursing home in San Antonio, we believe in helping our patients and residents embrace healthy aging every day. Since September is Healthy Aging Month, we want to discuss ways to empower healthy aging and how we help people remain as vibrant as possible, whether they’re at The Enclave to receive short-term skilled nursing care, rehabilitation therapy or compassionate long-term care. Here are some examples of how we help people age healthily and tips you can use in your daily life.
Physical Health
The Enclave offers many services to support physical health: skilled nursing, rehabilitation, short-term care, long-term care and memory care in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Our patients and residents can stay active in our rehabilitation gym or embrace the beauty of San Antonio on our mobility path. If you’re living in a private residence, you can still incorporate activity into your everyday life to support your health. Choose an activity you enjoy, such as walking, gardening or pickleball, and do it regularly. Daily exercise helps you stay strong, makes you feel more energized and even helps you sleep better. A good goal is 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week and two days of muscle-strengthening activity.
Mental Wellness
Did you know that The Enclave has a robust activities program that enriches mental and spiritual well-being? We offer many engaging activities that allow our patients and residents to engage their cognitive skills, such as art, music, gardening and plenty of opportunities for engaging conversations with other residents. We also offer various support services to ensure that our residents receive proper mental health care when needed. At home, make time for the activities you love – whether it’s a puzzle, sudoku or another activity. Don’t hesitate to speak to your primary care physician if you feel you could benefit from a referral to a mental healthcare practitioner.
Healthy Diet
Every Texan knows that good food is part of a good life. At The Enclave, we bring San Antonio’s best nourishing cuisine to our patients and residents with restaurant-style dining. Our registered dietician ensures our meals not only have a local flair but also support our residents’ preferences and health goals. Proper nutrition plays a critical role in aging well. You can embrace a healthy diet at home to help increase your energy and avoid chronic diseases. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and enough lean protein to support your muscle mass. Don’t underestimate the power of a healthy diet; it can reduce the risk of cognitive decline, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and other chronic health conditions. The body’s ability to absorb vitamin B12 also decreases with age, so eat enough fortified foods or take a B12 supplement.
Social Connections
At The Enclave, we’ve never met a stranger. Loneliness and social isolation can be dangerous; they’re linked with an increased risk of premature death, dementia, heart disease and depression according to the CDC. We offer our residents many opportunities to engage with the rest of their community and to build friendships with others. From group activities, outings and a bustling social calendar, the community at The Enclave is like a family. For people who live in a private home, consider finding interest-focused or faith-based groups that can keep you engaged in your community.
The Touchstone Difference
The dedicated caregivers at The Enclave are dedicated to helping each patient and resident age healthfully. From a care team that treats residents like family to specialized clinical care and opportunities for socialization, they ensure that each resident receives the personalized attention they deserve.
