Ussery-Roan Texas State Veterans Home celebrated a resident’s 102nd birthday on July 6th, 2018.

Leslie Linger, born in Vega served in the Army Air Corps in Lubbock in 1940. He then served at Lemoore Air Army Field in California, rising to the rank of Tech Sergeant.

Linger was honorably discharged in 1945. He then returned to farm life before getting involved in local politics.

“He never did go overseas, although he did get orders. His group was responsible for doing all of the paperwork for all the soldiers going overseas from California,” said Linger’s son, Joe.

Linger served as mayor of Vega from 1983 to 1985.

The City of Amarillo also proclaimed July 6th Leslie Linger Day.
