Soon, instead of a nursing home, East Texas Veterans in need of care will have another option.

It's a first for East Texas --- and hundreds of jobs are available for East Texans.

The Watkins-Logan-Garrison Texas State Veterans Home plans to open in November.

The skilled nursing center is the first of its kind in East Texas and the whole state for that matter -- it offers family-style living in a small home-like environment.

"It takes the institution out of the nursing home and turns it back into...a home," said Britta Strickland.

Strickland, with the company in charge of the home, tells KETK, by the time all 100 beds are filled, they're hoping to employ up to 140 East Texans.

"We'll be looking for a business office manager and a receptionist and social worker and nurses and then we're looking for people that are CNA's or that have nursing home experience or maybe home health experience," Stickland said.

Thomas Niffenegger is a Veteran himself.

After more than 20 years working for the UT Health Center, he's proud to be the Director of Maintenance at the home and helping out those that have served their country.

"It makes me feel wonderful...because these guys that have sacrificed so much for's just great to be a part of something that gives back to the Veterans and the people that have really let us have the kind of life that we do have," Niffenegger said.

The job fair is at the Veterans Home Wednesday starting at 2 until 8 at night.

It's at 11466 Honor Lane, Tyler -- along the west side of Highway 155, just south of County Road 334 near the historic World War II era Camp Fannin.
