Those who missed the Career Fair Wednesday at the Watkins-Logan-Garrison Texas State Veterans Home still have time to go out by 8 p.m. today and fill out an application.
“Due to the overwhelming amount of applicants, we have decided to extend accepting applications through today,” Audra Knight, marketing and organizational development manager for Touchstone Communities, said in an email.
Touchstone had 360 people apply Wednesday for 125 positions available at the new veterans home expected to open in November.
Ms. Knight said representatives will be at the center until 8 p.m. today taking more applications and will begin calling back people for interviews next week.
The majority of the 125 positions they need to fill will be elder care assistants and nurses, both RNs and LVNs. A business office manager and receptionist, social worker, environmental specialist (housekeeping and laundry) and food service supervisor also will be needed.
Touchstone Communities, a provider of skilled nursing and rehabilitation care, will operate the veterans home on behalf of the Texas Veterans Land Board.
There will be 10 homes, each housing 10 residents, and homes will be opened two at a time starting in November. To open the first two homes, they will need to hire 35 people, so they will call back probably five applicants to interview for every position, Britta Strickland, senior vice president of small-house development and operations for Touchstone Communities, said at the fair Wednesday.
She expects to admit the first residents at the home, located just north of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, around Nov. 15.
